HRV and Training: How to Read Your Readiness

What heart rate variability, resting heart rate and sleep tell you about training today, and what they do not.

What HRV Measures

Heart rate variability (HRV) is the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher values relative to your own normal often go with good recovery; a drop can follow hard training, poor sleep, illness or stress.

Compare With Yourself

HRV differs a lot between people, so compare today with your own recent baseline, not with someone else's number.

One low reading means little. A trend over several days, especially with a raised resting heart rate and short sleep, means more.

How to Use It

On a low day, keep the session but cut the hardest sets, or swap intensity for technique work.

On a high day, it is a reasonable day to attempt a heavy top set.

What It Cannot Tell You

Readiness is a guide, not a diagnosis. If you feel unwell, rest regardless of the number, and see a doctor for symptoms that concern you.
